Come and step inside one of Blackburn’s most historic landmarks as we open to the public for Heritage Open Days 2026 – the biggest grassroots celebration of history and culture in Europe. Recently reopened after a £1.5m restoration of our Victorian tower, our building now reveals beautifully restored stone tracery, striking stained‑glass windows, and a new fully accessible entrance that brings this 19th‑century gem back to life. Built in 1865 as a cotton exchange, The Exchange later became a celebrated performance hall, welcoming travelling artists — including Charles Dickens — before transforming into a cinema in the 1920s, the era many local people still remember fondly. During Heritage Open Days, visitors can explore the building through pre-booked guided tours, learn about its rich past, and see the impressive renovation work up close. Our café will be open throughout the event, serving drinks and cakes for anyone who wants to relax and take in the surroundings.
We’re open on Saturday 12 September between 10.30am and 4.30pm with tours on the half hour. Last tour is at 3.30pm. Places must be pre-booked here.
