The team behind the ongoing restoration of the former Apollo Cinema building is delighted to announce that the much-loved stained-glass panels, installed approximately 40 years ago, are being carefully removed for conservation. Though relatively modern in age, these windows represent a cherished chapter in the building’s cinematic past and will now be preserved and placed on public display within the revitalised building.
The decision follows a detailed review of their current condition and the technical requirements of the wider restoration works.
Alastair Murdoch, trustee said “These windows have become a much-loved reminder of the building’s cinema heritage, and we want to make sure they can be enjoyed for generations to come.
The windows have suffered some wear and tear over the years, and keeping them in place would have required major repairs and further changes to the building. Instead, they will be safely restored and proudly displayed inside the building, where they can be appreciated up close and protected from the weather.
This work is part of a wider effort to celebrate the history of the building while preparing it for an exciting new chapter.
Alastair explains: “We are also installing new entrance doors that look similar to the originals but offer better accessibility, improved warmth, and the option for future automatic opening.
“Our goal is to honour the past while creating a building that is welcoming, sustainable, and ready to serve the community for many years ahead.”
